Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a negative note on January 8, tracking weak cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading lower around 26,187.50.
The cautious sentiment follows the benchmarks extending their decline for a third consecutive session on January 7, with Nifty slipping below 26,150 amid heightened volatility. Markets remained under pressure due to rising geopolitical concerns, continued FII selling, and weak trends across Asian markets.
On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 84961.14 down by -102.2 points or by -0.12 % and then NSE Nifty was at 26140.75 down by -37.95 points or by -0.14 %.
On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed on Thursday, tracking an overnight decline on Wall Street amid elevated geopolitical tensions and comments from the US President, who said he would not allow defence companies to pay dividends or undertake share buybacks until concerns related to executive compensation and production issues are addressed.
In early trade, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.46%, South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.12%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.21%. Meanwhile, US equity futures were largely flat during Asian hours.
Overnight, US markets ended mostly lower, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average snapping a three-day winning streak, closing down 0.3% and 0.6%, respectively.
The Nasdaq Composite bucked the trend, edging up nearly 0.2%, supported by strong gains in Alphabet shares, which briefly surpassed Apple in market capitalisation for the first time since 2019.
