Hindalco Industries has commissioned India’s first greenfield Superfine PPT ATH (Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate) manufacturing plant at its Belagavi facility in Karnataka, marking a significant step towards reducing the country’s dependence on imports of the specialty material.
The new facility has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes, which is designed to meet nearly the entire domestic demand for PPT ATH from the wire and cable industry. The plant can be expanded to 60,000 tonnes annually in phases, depending on market demand.
PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in HFFR cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. Its ability to suppress flame propagation and smoke generation makes it important for fire-safety applications across electrical, infrastructure and mobility sectors.
The commissioning comes amid rising demand driven by stricter fire-safety standards, increasing EV and infrastructure adoption, and the shift towards sustainable materials. The facility is also expected to support the wider adoption of HFFR cables in India.
Hindalco said the plant has been developed using in-house technology and R&D, with automated process controls and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem to ensure consistent product quality.
The facility is powered entirely by renewable energy from biomass, solar and wind sources, making it the company’s sustainable addition to its Specialty Alumina portfolio.
The plant strengthens Hindalco’s position in high-value specialty alumina while supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat, reducing import dependence and creating domestic capabilities for advanced fire-safety materials.
