Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel producer, is doubling its slag processing capacity at its Jajpur, Odisha unit with a new wet milling plant, marking a significant step toward circular production and resource conservation. The initiative is expected to recover valuable metals from industrial waste, support the company’s expanded operations, and create around 140 new jobs in the region.
The project is being implemented in partnership with Harsco Environmental, a global leader in environmental solutions for the metals industry. Jindal Stainless is investing USD 150 million in the plant under a 15-year partnership, which will recoup its value through metal recovery from slag.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, said:
“As we expand capacity to meet rising stainless steel demand, our focus remains on environmentally responsible production. The wet milling plant will enable optimal utilization of slag and create new opportunities for local communities.”
Manjunath Raghavelu, MD, Harsco Environmental India & MEA, added:
“This 15-year contract strengthens our decade-long collaboration and makes Jajpur the first site in India with two wet milling plants. Together, we will advance the circular economy and sustainable slag utilization.”
This initiative aligns with Jindal Stainless’ ESG goals and its commitment to Net Zero by 2050. In FY25, the company reduced its carbon footprint by ~14%, powered its operations with India’s first green hydrogen plant for stainless steel production, and installed the largest captive solar energy plant within a single industrial campus in Odisha, reinforcing its focus on sustainability.
